Quite often, when I meet new people and tell them what I do, they invariably ask, “What is reiki?” or “How can reiki help me?”.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.1 The word “reiki” comes from the Japanese words “rei”- meaning “universal” and “ki” meaning “life force”.
How Does Reiki Promote Healing?
The reiki is the healing energy channeling through the practitioner to the client. It is holistic and complementary. During your healing therapy session, a reiki practitioner will take into account mental, physical, emotional, and/or spiritual healing. It is a gentle therapy that can be used in conjunction with other types of medical treatment.
When Did People Start Using Reiki Energy for Healing?
Reiki energy has been around for thousands of years, and likely since the beginning of time. It is, after all, universal energy!
Mikao Usui is credited as being the founder of modern reiki. In 1922, Mikao Usui went to Mt. Kurama, a sacred mountain in Japan, to fast and meditate for 21 days.
It was during this time that he received the reiki energy and sacred symbols used in reiki. He began to further develop his system and began teaching others how to use the reiki healing method.
One of his students—Hawayo Takata—is credited with bringing Usui reiki to the West. She received healing at one of Usui’s centers and was so impressed with how effective it was in healing her illnesses that she wanted to learn it for herself. She became a reiki master and teacher and brought reiki to Hawaii, where she opened several healing clinics.
Is Reiki Safe?
Reiki is a safe and gentle healing method. The practitioner will channel the healing universal energy, but the reiki energy goes where the body needs it. It promotes relaxation and stress reduction.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, it can:
Bring on a meditative state
Foster tissue and bone healing after injury or surgery
Stimulate your body’s immune system
Promote natural self-healing
Relieve pain and tension
Support the well-being of people receiving traditional medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and kidney dialysis
Where to Find Reiki Energy Healing Near Me
At Moïta Therapeutics, we also practice Quantum Shamanic Reiki (QSR). This form of reiki is a blend of traditional Japanese Usui Reiki and Algonquin Shamanism, as taught by The 8th Fire.
During a reiki session with us, we create a safe container for you to feel held and secure. This way you can relax, and your body can begin to heal itself.
How Should I Prepare for My Session?
Your intention is an important component in a reiki session. It’s helpful for you to arrive with an intention for the session. It can be as simple as “I just want to rest and relax” or “I’d like healing from physical pain” or “I’d like some clarity on a relationship issue or issue at work”.
You will then lie comfortably, fully clothed, on a massage table. The reiki practitioner will use light touch, or a hands-off approach, to channel the reiki to different areas of your body.
How Will I Feel After Reiki?
You may feel heat, tingling, or simply feel relaxed. A typical session takes about an hour. After the session, you may feel energized, a little tired, or somewhere in between.
There’s no right or wrong way to receive reiki energy. Each session and each person is different, but the important thing is to take gentle care of yourself, drink lots of water, and enjoy the state of relaxation.
